The decision to use a guide
dog rather than a long white cane is simply a matter of personal preference.
To be considered for training at a guide dog school, a person must be
legally blind and demonstrate competence in orientation and mobility with
the use of a cane. Those who have already had one successful guide dog
placement will most probably be accepted for training with a new dog if
the older dog dies or becomes incapacitated. There are a number of high
quality training centers throughout the United States, including one here
in Oregon.
